Last week, we explored how the "system of belief" impacts self-growth. If you missed that, you can catch up here. This is part two, we'll continue building our diagram.

Here's today's diagram:

How to change, part 2: System of Action

Everything inside the dotted lines is what we're focusing on today.

Summary of the diagram:

New beliefs feed into our attentional bias. Our attentional bias acts as a filter that increases or decreases the number of opportunities we see in the world. The more opportunities we see, the more action we take. The higher our confidence is, the more likely we are to act. And the more we take action, the more outcomes will occur.

Attentional bias, TLDR

Your subconscious is always attempting to validate your beliefs. This is "confirmation bias." Confirmation bias impacts more than how you interpret information; it affects what you notice in the first place.

This results in attentional bias.
It's the filter you see the world through.

A quick rant: This is why the "shut up pussy, do something" type of motivational content is B.S. These "action" gurus are approaching self-growth from their point of view of us. In reality, we are often blind to the best opportunities. And since they have no point of reference in our specific lives, this advice falls short.

Yes, it's true. You need to take action to make a change in your life. But...

You can't take action if you can't clearly see the opportunities.

This is why forming beliefs that support the actions you want to take is so critical. New beliefs open up new opportunities that were not seen before.

Beliefs that do not align with the actions you want to take can be a massive bottleneck in the system of self-growth.

Next up

We connected the system of belief with the system of action in two places (new beliefs > attentional bias, confidence > action). But there are a couple more key connections to make.

In fact, it's one giant system that acts as a loop. It can be a positive or negative loop, depending on how we approach it.

In the next article, we'll complete the loop to get a holistic view of the system. This will expose the highest leverage entry points we can use to make the system work for us. And ultimately, level up and reach our goals faster.

Catch you next week ✌️
